Coal-fred power plants provide nearly half of the electricity generated in the United States, yet most of the existing coal-fred power plant ?eet is 25–45 years old. Deploying advanced coal-fred power plants and maintaining the existing ?eet requires the capacity to provide equipment, skilled labor, and project management expertise. However, in the near term, the domestic industrial base to build future coalbased power plants faces several challenges, including low demand for new conventional and advanced coal-fred units over the next few years, regulatory uncertainty regarding reducing conventional pollutants and greenhouse gases, competition from other fuels, and an aging workforce.
