This response, moreover, must happen on an unprecedented scale and at speed if the world is to avoid the most catastrophic consequences of climate change. Considering that two-thirds of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions originate from the energy sector, the IPCC emphatically calls for an immediate transformation of the world’s energy system with massive uptake of renewables and steadily increasing energy efficiency (IPCC, 2018).
