URS Group (URS) performed a Phase I archaeological survey between January and May of 2012 for the approximately 80-mile-long (130 km) pipeline corridor for the proposed NRG Energy, Inc. (NRG) W.A. Parish Post-Combustion CO2 Capture and Sequestration Project. The pipeline would be located in Fort Bend, Wharton, and Jackson Counties, Texas to transport captured CO2 from the W.A Parish Plant to the West Ranch oil field. Approximately 100 percent of the primary pipeline survey corridor was assessed for cultural resources; additional land permission is currently required to survey a single proposed access road and three additional temporary workspaces. As a result of this investigation, 101.0 miles (162.5 km) of preferred and abandoned pipeline corridor, 75 access roads, measuring 49.7 miles (80.0 km) in length, and 47 additional temporary workspaces, totaling 88.7 acres (35.9 ha) in extent, were evaluated. As part of this investigation, 1,625 shovel tests were excavated, six archaeological sites and 12 historic standing structures were identified, and 1,935 artifacts were analyzed.
