項(xiàng)目先鋒代表著推進(jìn)減少溫室氣體排放的一個重要步驟——二氧化碳（CO2）。TransAlta及其項(xiàng)目合作伙伴認(rèn)為，保持化石燃料發(fā)電的長期可行性是全球的必要條件。通過經(jīng)濟(jì)碳捕獲和儲存（CCS），我們可以保留煤炭和天然氣作為燃料選擇，同時解決氣候變化問題。包括加拿大在內(nèi)的世界大部分地區(qū)都有幸擁有大量可靠的低成本煤炭儲備——事實(shí)上，煤炭比石油多。在全球發(fā)電結(jié)構(gòu)中，煤炭至關(guān)重要，而且往往是某些地區(qū)唯一實(shí)用的燃料。隨著數(shù)十億美元的能源基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施已經(jīng)建成（還有數(shù)十億美元將要建成），碳捕獲和儲存（CCS）可能是將這些設(shè)施在其壽命期間對環(huán)境的長期影響降至最低的唯一途徑。項(xiàng)目先鋒將展示一個后燃燒，改造CCS過程，可以連接到現(xiàn)有的能源基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施。

Project Pioneer represents a major step toward advancing the reduction of a key greenhouse gas (GHG) emission – carbon dioxide (CO2). TransAlta and its project partners believe that maintaining the long-term viability of fossil-fired generation is a global necessity. Through economic carbon capture and storage (CCS) we can keep coal and natural gas as fuel options while addressing climate change concerns. Much of the world, including Canada, is fortunate to have huge, reliable reserves of low-cost coal – more coal than oil, in fact. Within the global electricity generation mix, coal is vital and often the only practical fuel for some regions. With billions of dollars of energy infrastructure already built (and billions more to come) carbon capture and storage (CCS) may be the only way to minimize the long-term impact these facilities will have on the environment over the course of their lifespan. Project Pioneer will demonstrate a postcombustion, retrofit CCS process that can be attached to existing energy infrastructure.
