A decade ago, it appeared that the United States might be on the verge of a so-called nuclear renaissance. Bolstered by high natural gas prices, new standardized reactor designs, a streamlined regulatory framework, and the prospect of stronger greenhouse gas regulations, U.S. utilities began ordering new nuclear power plants for the frst time since the 1970s. Proponents asserted that the new reactors would not merely provide a massive improvement in safety over existing designs but also produce electricity at a cost competitive with conventional alternatives. Nuclear fssion would fnally become a viable business proposition, o?ering a proftable avenue to wean the American economy o? of fossil fuels.
