A general trend over the past severalyears has been the dramatic increase ofthe hydrogen demand in refineries. Since thecrude oil feedstock has become heavier andmore sour and more stringent environmentalregulations have been put into place, refiner.ies fell short of hydrogen. This trend has ledto numerous installations of hydrogen pro-duction capacities and revamps of existinghydrogen plants all over the world. More-over, the production capacity of individualhydrogen plants has increased to a rangwhere process design and plant arrangementgenerate new challenges and opportunitiesIn the following the design and engineeringexperience with large capacity productionunits will be shown with the hydrogen manu-facturing unit of the SINCOR upgradercomplex as an exampleFurthermore an approach will be made to in-dividual options and opportunities for inno-vative considerations in the process designwith respect to important issues like lowemissions and increased safety awareness inthe petrochemical and refinery industry
