Inmanymajoremittingcountriescoalremainsanimportantsourceofenergysupply-upto70%oftotalprimaryenergysupplyinChinaandSouthAfrica,withdominantshareoftotalelectricitygenerationinmanycountries(40%inGermany,morethan70%inAustralia,China,India,PolandandSouthAfrica).TheNationallyDeterminedContributions(NDCs)submittedundertheUNFCCCParisAgreementimplysignificantreductionsintheshareofcoalinprimaryenergyby2030.Holdingtheincreaseinglobaltemperaturetowellbelow2Candpursuingeffortstolimititto1.5Cwouldrequireevendeeperreductionsincoaluseintheenergysystemby2030and2050,evenallowingforCCStechnology.
